Damaso Reyes:The Crucible

The following look at Marine Corps training at Parris Island is from photographer Damaso Reyes, who earlier posted this nice series on Kosovo. From Reyes: These images were taken earlier this year during a visit to Parris Island, South Carolina where all marine recruits from east of the Mississippi are trained. The culmination of recruit training is The Crucible, a grueling 54 hour exercise in which teams of recruits have to endure the elements, sleep deprivation, 29 problem solving exercises and hunger all while hiking a total of 42 miles while under the constant gaze of their drill instructors. I spent a day with the recruits of Team 2-2 and got a taste of what they had to endure in order to become marines. To see more images from this series visit www.damaso.com/marines.swf.

And for those of you who would like to learn more about Marine Corps basic training, here are a few books on the subject. One caveat, I can't vouch for any of them.
